Since its inception in 1997, the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at JFS has served over 1,000 students from more than 40 countries. We offer classes for international adults who want to improve their English language skills. The program offers instruction at various levels of English language proficiency, including Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced, as well as test taking and work-related English skills for the advanced speaker.
Our classes emphasize the communicative approach to language learning while building life skills, focusing on building speaking skills through self-expression and communication. Classes also cover other important skills, such as pronunciation, reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary and grammar.
The ESL program at JFS is more than a language training curriculum. It is also designed to provide students with social, cultural, and practical skills. In addition to computer training, resume writing, interview practice, classes regularly include workshops and field skills to help students adjust to their new community and to life in the U.S. A group of dedicated volunteers supplement the class as Conversation Partners who work one-on-one with students to provide individualized instruction and conversation practice.
We partner with other organizations such as the University of Michigan to encourage community outreach and education. The JFS International Lunch, hosted annually by our ESL students and teachers at JFS, has been a wonderfully successful community outreach program, and a delicious way for students to share their cultural background! Check out our Calendar of Events for information on the upcoming celebration.
JFS ESL Program also includes Citizenship Classes to provide students with the skills necessary to pass their citizenship test. We also offer classes in academic skills, from high school to college to encourage educational opportunities for our students.
