The JFS Summer Youth Employment Program is focused on creating opportunities for youth by providing required program elements, including: one-on-one tutoring, summer employment, pre-employment / job readiness training, work experience, supportive services, leadership development, mentoring, counseling, and follow-up services.
While addressing individual needs, JFS SYEP includes occupational exploration counseling, competency-based vocation education, work-based learning at employer work sites, social and employability skills development, counseling and related support services, assistance with access to health care, child care support, transportation and post-program placement and support through JFS JET and Career Services. Other strategies are focused on management and outreach, for example: maintaining partnerships with community organizations, non-profit employers, educational institutions, and the local business community.
The JFS Summer Youth Employment Program includes the following program elements:
- The ability to effectively recruit and retain youth involved in the program
- Program staff who have a demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for working with youth
- A focus on individual motivation and life skills training
- Career, life skills and job readiness curriculum that support personal motivation and transformation and is oriented to the learning needs of youth
- Use of “hands-on” and project based learning opportunities that prepare youth for employment
- Case management of individual needs
- Placement in vocational and occupational learning opportunities
- A range of pre-employment experiences such as internships, job shadowing and mentoring
In addition, JFS SYEP will strive to include the following program elements:
- Mentoring services to connect youth with caring adults
- Tutoring for youth, when necessary, in basic literacy and math required for pre-employment experiences and job placement
- Use of an appropriate career interest inventory, vocational aptitude or assessment tools for all internship and employment experiences
- Linkages to the Workforce Investment Board, Success by 21 initiative and resources
- Placement and support in employment opportunities
The JFS SYEP strives to create new alliances and community collaborations that increase the pool of employment talent and benefit the lives of youth who have not traditionally had access to important career development and employment opportunities.
While the JFS SYEP is focused on career readiness and pre-employment training, it places a special emphasis on the “whole” individual and providing strong human and social services supports to promote youth success. JFS’ wrap-around case management approach to service delivery has proven to be the most effective modality of service delivery with clients with multiple barriers.
Participants who have entered the program will complete a Participant/Individual Service Plan that will identify goals, interests and personal assets/skills. While job readiness and employability is the focus of the JFS SYEP, special attention is paid to personal motivation, leadership, life skills training and case management integrated into the overall experience.
The JFS SYEP students face many challenges due to their environmental factors. JFS SYEP is committed to working closely with its partners to keep communication open regarding each participant and the best way all parties can work collaboratively toward the individual’s success.
