Education (ESL)
Since its inception in 1997, the JFS English as a Second Language (ESL) Program has served over 1,000 students from more than 30 countries.
JFS holds English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for foreign born adults who want to improve their English language skills. The program features instructions for various levels of English language proficiency, including Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. The program covers a wide range of English language skills, from the fundamentals of pronunciation, comprehension, vocabulary and grammar, to advanced conversation and writing.
The ESL program at JFS is more than a language training curriculum. It is also designed to provide the newly arrived foreign student with social, cultural, and practical skills to help them adjust to their new conditions of life in the U.S. Also offered is computer training, resume writing, interview practice, and exposure to the American way of life through field trips, video presentations and constant question-and-answer time. A class in citizenship test practice also is available to interested students, as well as one-on-one sessions with a tutor (as needed, determined by the classroom teacher.)
The JFS International Luncheon, hosted annually by our ESL students and teachers at JFS has been a wonderfully successful community outreach program, and a delicious way to get to know our students’ cultural backgrounds! Check out our Calendar of Events for information on the upcoming celebration.
